TOP GIRLS

by CARYL CHURCHILL

directed by EMILY PIRO

THE CHAPEL, St. Louis, MO

In Top Girls, Caryl Churchill creates a world that is as natural as it is surreal. It tells the story of Marlene, a go-getting career woman who will let nothing and no one keep her from succeeding. Marlene shares her ambition with a circle of friends, among them a 19th century Scottish explorer, a 13th century Japanese concubine, and a legendary female Pope, to name a few. In the work force, we observe her success at a cost, and in her family we discover where that cost is paid. Top Girls examines individualism, feminism and blind ambition, and the paradoxical lives of women in the workforce and at home.
